This growth was primarily driven by increasing consumer demand for organic and health-promoting fruits, which raised overall consumption. Improvements in transportation and logistics further supported this trend by enhancing the year-round availability and distribution of kiwifruit across the region.

After two years of growth, kiwifruit production in the Americas declined. In 2020, the region produced 198.3 thousand tons of kiwifruit, marking a slight year-over-year decrease of 1.3%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 8.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 2.6%. The peak production volume was recorded in 2019 at 201.0 thousand tons, with the largest annual increase of 5.3% also occurring that year.

Following two years of gains, the value of kiwifruit production in the Americas fell. In 2020, kiwifruit output was valued at 306.9 million US dollars, down by 19.6% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 8.9%, equating to an annualized decline of 3.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 381.8 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 12.0%.

Exports kiwifruit from Americas

Exports in kind, K t

In 2020, the Americas exported 136.3 thousand tons of kiwifruit, representing a significant increase of 36.8% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 21.3%, with an annualized growth rate of 6.6%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 99.6 thousand tons, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 13.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the structure of kiwifruit exports in volume terms showed a diversified set of trading partners. China accounted for 9.7% of exports, Italy for 8.0%, and the Netherlands for 7.9%. Together, these three countries represented only 25.6% of total export flows, while the remaining 74.4% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

After two years of decline, the value of kiwifruit exports from the Americas increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 210.9 million US dollars, reflecting a notable uptick of 11.4% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 2.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 189.3 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual decline of 7.5%.

During 2017-2020, kiwifruit exports from the Americas in value terms were spread across a wide range of markets. China accounted for 10.1% of export value, Italy for 8.1%, and the Netherlands for 8.0%. Collectively, these three countries represented just 26.1% of total export flows.

Kiwifruit import volume in the Americas increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 75.3 thousand tons, reflecting a modest rise of 5.2% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volume decreased by 6.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.1%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 70.1 thousand tons, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 12.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy stood out as the main source for kiwifruit imports in volume terms, accounting for 32.0% of imports. New Zealand followed with 12.6%, and Greece with 2.7%. Together, these three countries represented 47.4% of total import flows.

Kiwifruit imports into the Americas increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports were valued at 152.1 million US dollars, indicating a moderate year-over-year uptick of 5.0%. Between 2017 and 2020, import value grew by 14.2%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 4.5%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Italy remained the leading source for kiwifruit imports in value terms, accounting for 32.3% of imports. New Zealand followed with 20.1%, and Greece with 2.5%. These three countries together represented 55.0% of total import flows.
