Earlier Report Observations

The hazelnut market in the Americas expanded significantly from 2018 to 2022, with volume rising from 80.5 thousand tons to 136.1 thousand tons. This growth was initially fueled by robust global demand, particularly from the gastronomy and spread segments, which saw a reported 33% surge in 2019. Technological advancements in key producing regions like Turkey also contributed to market efficiency during this period.

Production in the Americas climbed steadily, supported by recurrent supply shocks in Europe. Severe frosts in France in 2021 and 2022, compounded by infestations of pests like the brown marmorated stink bug, constrained global availability. This heightened international demand for American hazelnuts, allowing both production and exports to increase while domestic consumption still grew until 2022.

A pivotal shift occurred in 2023. Despite continued production growth to 139.6 thousand tons, the market volume contracted to 110.5 thousand tons as exports more than doubled to 44.3 thousand tons. This was driven by acute supply shortages and soaring production costs in Europe, which made American nuts more competitive on the global market. By 2024, a catastrophic harvest in France further underscored the structural supply challenges in traditional producing regions.
