The African fresh cherries market volume grew from 29 990 tons in 2018 to 38 872 tons in 2019. This expansion coincided with the adoption of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which initiated the reduction of trade barriers, and a significant increase in South African production supported by provincial agricultural departments.

Market volume declined to 29 035 tons in 2020 but rebounded to 32 656 tons in 2021, driven by the ongoing expansion of cherry planting areas in South Africa that had grown by 78% over previous years. The market then saw a modest rise to 33 394 tons in 2022.

In 2023, the market volume experienced a slight decrease to 32 432 tons. Industry developments in South Africa, including further planted area growth and improved producer organization, indicated continued sectoral momentum into 2024.

Cherry production in Africa grew for two consecutive years before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 36,817 tonnes, marking a substantial increase of 34.2%. However, by 2020, output had fallen to 27,343 tonnes, representing a sharp decline of 25.7% compared to the previous year.

Exports cherries from Africa

Exports in kind, t

Export volumes experienced notable fluctuations during this period. In 2019, shipments hit their lowest point at 191 tonnes, reflecting a significant decline of 49.7%. The highest volume was recorded in 2017, with a top-to-bottom ratio of 2.3 times compared to 2019. By 2020, exports from Africa had rebounded to 364 tonnes, showing a strong increase of 90.3% from the previous year.

From 2017 to 2020, export destinations for cherries were relatively balanced rather than concentrated. The United Kingdom accounted for 30.8% of exports in kind, followed by the Netherlands at 6.3% and the United Arab Emirates at 2.9%. Together, these three countries represented 40.0% of total flows, while numerous other nations made up the remaining 60.0%.

Exports in value, K $ US

Cherry exports from Africa in value terms showed mixed trends. In 2019, the largest decline of 11.6% was recorded, but this was followed by growth in 2020, when exports totaled 2,503 thousand US dollars, representing a 19.3% increase year-over-year. The most significant rise occurred in 2018 at 31.6%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 38.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates were the top contributors to export value. The United Kingdom accounted for 43.5% of exports in value terms, the Netherlands for 16.1%, and the United Arab Emirates for 8.1%. Collectively, these three countries represented 67.8% of total export flows.

Imports cherries to Africa

Import volumes displayed volatility over the observed period. In 2017, imports were at their lowest, while they peaked in 2018 at 2,942 tonnes, reflecting a 1.9-fold gap between these years. The largest increase of 93.3% was recorded in 2018, followed by a decline of 23.7% in 2019. By 2020, imports had decreased to 2,057 tonnes, down 8.4% from the previous year.

From 2017 to 2020, three key markets dominated cherry imports to Africa in kind: Syria, Lebanon, and Greece. Together, these countries absorbed 78.7% of total imports.

Import values showed significant volatility during this period. In 2017, imports bottomed out, while they peaked in 2019 at 9,629 thousand US dollars, with a 3.7-fold difference between these years. The largest increase of 131.0% was recorded in 2019. However, by 2020, imports had fallen to 7,610 thousand US dollars, indicating a substantial decrease of 21.0% from the previous year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Syria, Lebanon, and Greece accounted for the largest share of import value. Syria represented 54.5% of imports in value terms, Lebanon 17.3%, and Greece 5.3%. Together, these three countries comprised 77.1% of total import flows.
