Earlier Report Observations

The in-shell walnut market in New Zealand opened the period with production of 840 tonnes in 2018, a level supported by the Walnuts NZ Co-operative's focus on standardizing drying services and quality controls, including cultivar separation for better processing efficiency. A significant drop to around 700 tonnes occurred in 2019, shifting the market to a lower volume plateau.

Output stabilized at approximately 700 tonnes per year through 2020 and 2021. During this time, the industry's activities centered on cultivar development and promotional research, including studies highlighting the low carbon footprint of walnut orchards due to tree carbon sequestration, which helped maintain consistent production.

A further decline to about 619 tonnes took place in 2022. That year, the Walnuts NZ Co-operative made a major capital investment, opening a high-tech automated sorting factory in West Melton, Canterbury, to boost processing capacity and product quality with color and infrared sorting. This technological upgrade, alongside sustained consumer demand for walnuts' nutritional benefits, characterized the industry's development as market volume held steady at just over 618 tonnes in 2023.
