The Syrian market for in-shell walnuts expanded steadily from 2018 to 2023, with total volume growing from 12 982 t to 16 519 t. This rise was underpinned by a sharp increase in imports, which more than tripled over the period, reaching 4 094 t in 2023.

Domestic production experienced a contraction in 2019, falling to 10 569 t, but recovered in subsequent years to peak at 13 310 t in 2022. The sustained growth in import volumes, particularly notable in 2019 and 2020, helped meet rising domestic consumption and supported the overall market expansion.

Market growth moderated in 2023, with volume stabilizing near the 2022 level at 16 519 t, as imports remained high and domestic production saw a slight decrease from the previous year's peak.

After two years of decline, Syria's in-shell walnut production rebounded. In 2020, the country produced 11 072 tonnes of in-shell walnuts, showing a modest year-over-year increase of 4.8%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 10.2%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 10 569 tonnes, with the steepest drop of 12.9% occurring that same year.

Exports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a dramatic 45-fold swing between these years. In 2020, Syria exported 211 tonnes of in-shell walnuts, marking a substantial increase of 31.1% compared to the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 341 tonnes. The sharpest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 52.8%, while the largest increase was in 2018, soaring by 4 412.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey was the primary destination for Syria's in-shell walnut exports, accounting for 77.7% of total export volume. Other markets played a much smaller role during this period.
