The Iranian in-shell hazelnuts market volume remained stable, moving between 13 767 t and 13 949 t from 2018 to 2020. In 2018, the market was supported by growing domestic demand. The following year, a slight contraction occurred as production was hindered by climate change and pest issues, which reduced output. A recovery in 2020 was aided by increased global demand for plant-based and healthy foods, which encouraged higher production.

Market volume dipped to 13 671 t in 2021, primarily due to rising production costs for harvesting, transport, and packaging. It rebounded to 13 858 t in 2022, partly driven by seasonal demand peaks during the Nowruz and Yalda celebrations. By 2023, volume reached 14 027 t, supported by the first significant import flow of 160 t. Throughout the period, currency fluctuations and evolving customs policies continued to influence export activity.

In 2020, Iran produced 14 073 tonnes of in-shell hazelnuts, representing a 1.8% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 10%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.2%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 0.8%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 9.0%.

Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 61.1 tonnes, then surged to a peak of 124.3 tonnes in 2020, marking a 103.5% year-over-year increase. The difference between these two years was twofold. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, when exports dropped by 20.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Afghanistan and India were the dominant destinations for Iran's in-shell hazelnut exports in value terms, jointly accounting for 94.2% of total flows. The remaining volume was distributed among smaller markets.
