Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for melons and papayas in Iran expanded from 1 480 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 748 thousand tons in 2019. This growth coincided with the increased supply of papaya through online stores and a gradual rise in consumer familiarity with this tropical fruit. The entry of new, easier-to-cultivate Bangladeshi papaya seeds, which flower quickly, supported broader planting efforts in southern provinces.

After the 2019 peak, the market volume contracted, falling to 1 657 thousand tons in 2020 and then plummeting to 1 026 thousand tons in 2021 and 706 thousand tons in 2022. During this period, the papaya segment saw continued developments, including further imports of seeds and seedlings for cultivation expansion and the growth of direct online sales from farms to consumers. However, these factors did not reverse the overall market decline.

In 2023, the market showed a recovery, rising by 15.6% to 816 thousand tons. High export volumes, consistently above 1.1 million tons in recent years, influenced domestic availability.
