Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the citrus fruit market in Indonesia expanded from 5.1 million tonnes to 5.5 million tonnes. This growth was initially fueled by rising health consciousness and the 'clean eating' trend among urban consumers, which increased demand for fresh and processed fruit. The entry of new professional import distributors in 2019 broadened product availability for hotels, restaurants, and modern retail. In 2020, heightened consumer focus on nutrition further boosted domestic consumption, while increased investment in production facilities supported output.

A temporary contraction occurred in 2021, with market volume falling to 5.2 million tonnes due to a drop in domestic production. During this period, consumer preference for organic and premium local fruit varieties remained strong, and government programs continued to encourage fruit consumption. The market rebounded to 5.5 million tonnes in 2022, aided by the government's Gelar Buah Nusantara event promoting local fruits and by growing export opportunities to markets like the Middle East.

The market's expansion accelerated in 2023, reaching 6.0 million tonnes. This was driven by a significant rise in domestic production, which hit 5.8 million tonnes, reflecting sustained investment in the sector and ongoing consumer demand for healthy food options.
