Earlier Report Observations

The orange market in Indonesia expanded from 2.5 million tonnes in 2018 to 2.9 million tonnes in 2023, driven by continuous government efforts to enhance local production. Initiatives such as technology adoption, farmer mentoring, and productivity improvements raised output, while modern retail channels increasingly accepted domestic oranges. Although household consumption dipped in 2023, industrial and other uses absorbed the surplus, supporting overall market growth.

A notable production surge in 2020, with productivity reaching 44.8 tonnes per hectare, pushed market volume above 2.7 million tonnes. The following year saw a contraction, coinciding with a shift in consumer preference toward quality local fruit. Recovery came in 2022 as Siam orange output jumped 13.2%, aided by sustained policy support and import adjustments to balance supply.

The market structure evolved with the emergence of organic orange segments and greater innovation in distribution. Consumer education and growing awareness of local produce gradually altered purchasing behavior, favoring fresh, high-quality Indonesian oranges over imports. These trends, alongside consistent government backing for farmers, underpinned the market's steady enlargement over the six-year period.
