Earlier Report Observations
The Iranian in-shell almond market opened the period at 200.7 thousand tonnes in 2018. Industry sources highlighted that a rising exchange rate encouraged almond exports, which likely reduced domestic availability. Over the next two years, market volume contracted to 176.8 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 141.6 thousand tonnes in 2020. During this phase, demand grew for paper-shell almonds owing to their convenience and taste, supporting output of that specific variety, yet overall market size continued to decline.
The downward trend persisted through 2021 and 2022, with volume dropping to 99.7 thousand tonnes and then 88.2 thousand tonnes – the lowest point in the period. Continued shifts in export policy and a favourable exchange rate further incentivised shipments abroad. At the same time, the expansion of online sales improved consumer access, and the emergence of green (unripe) almonds as a new product category created an additional demand stream within the market.
In 2023, the market rebounded sharply to 123.2 thousand tonnes. This recovery was driven by a production increase to 116.3 thousand tonnes and the first significant import volume of 7.8 thousand tonnes, marking a turnaround after several years of contraction.
