Between 2018 and 2021, the Swedish market for hypochlorites was influenced by a regulatory transition from chlorine gas to hypochlorites, mainly sodium hypochlorite, in drinking water production and disinfection. Recommended by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to reduce emission risks, this shift raised demand for hypochlorites, contributing to a rise in market value from $8.9 million in 2020 to $10.9 million in 2021.

From 2023 to 2024, domestic production expanded sharply, reaching 4,891 tonnes in 2024 compared to 133 tonnes in 2021, and total market volume grew to 25,767 tonnes. This acceleration was supported by new EU regulations, including REACH restrictions on chemicals and updated Swedish Food Agency controls for water treatment facilities, which further promoted hypochlorites as a safer alternative to chlorine gas.

The export market showed significant volatility during this period. In 2018, exports reached their lowest point at 205 tonnes, while 2019 saw the highest volume at 730 tonnes, representing a 3.6-fold difference between these years. By 2020, exports of hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites from Sweden had fallen to 522 tonnes, marking a sharp 28.4% decrease from the previous year. The most substantial year-over-year increase occurred in 2019, when exports surged by 256.7%.

From 2017 through 2020, Norway dominated Sweden's export flows in volume terms, accounting for 83.9% of total exports. Other destination countries represented relatively minor shares during this period.

The following year, 2019, saw the highest value at 450 000 US dollars, representing a 6.0% increase from 2018. By 2020, export values had declined slightly to 439 000 US dollars, marking a 2.4% decrease compared to the previous year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Norway, Finland and Denmark were Sweden's primary export markets for hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites in value terms. Norway accounted for 41.1% of total export value, Finland represented 29.4%, and Denmark made up 24.4%. Together, these three countries constituted 94.9% of Sweden's total exports in this product category.

Sweden's imports of hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites showed modest growth over the 2017-2020 period, increasing by 2.9% overall with an average annual growth rate of 1.0%. The highest import volume occurred in 2018 at 22 002 tonnes, which represented a 5.1% increase from the previous year. In 2019, imports declined by 1.6%, followed by minimal change in 2020 when Sweden imported 21 538 tonnes, showing negligible variation from 2019 levels.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, Norway was the dominant source for Sweden's imports of hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites in volume terms, accounting for 70.9% of total import flows. All other supplying countries combined represented the remaining share.

Sweden's import spending on hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites showed strong growth between 2017 and 2020, increasing by 32.4% overall with an average annual rate of 9.8%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when import values fell by 4.9%. This was followed by a substantial recovery in 2020, when Sweden imported 9 066 000 US dollars worth of these products, marking a 12.0% increase from the previous year. The largest year-over-year increase had occurred earlier in 2018, when import values rose by 24.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Norway, Denmark and Finland were Sweden's main suppliers of hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites in value terms. Norway accounted for 42.2% of total import value, Denmark represented 21.4%, and Finland contributed 16.4%. Collectively, these three countries supplied 80.1% of Sweden's imports in this product category.
