In 2018, demand for sodium hypochlorite was supported by its use in water treatment and disinfection across pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and construction sectors, alongside national occupational safety regulations for chemical exposure. However, the market volume contracted to 25.4 million USD by 2019, even as major urban centers invested in high-tech wastewater treatment plants managed by state and municipal entities. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 sharply increased demand for disinfectants, driving the market to 33.0 million USD.

Market volume fell to 25.6 million USD in 2021, influenced by stringent regulatory controls and low raw material availability that slowed new investment in the pulp and paper industry, reducing demand for bleaching applications. The preparation of new water quality legislation in 2022, culminating in the implementation of Decreto-Lei n.º 69/2023 in 2023, strengthened requirements for water treatment and directly stimulated demand for hypochlorites, helping the market recover to 37.6 million USD in 2023.

By 2024, the market volume adjusted to 33.0 million USD, returning near the level seen in 2020.
