Hungary established itself as a notable EU producer, accounting for 31% of production outside the top three member states and maintaining relatively low export prices. A broad EU-wide price increase for these chemicals, rising 58.6% between 2016 and 2021 with a sharp 26% jump in 2020, provided a higher-value context for the market.

After a dip in 2021 to 64 321 t and $11.4 million, the market volume fell further to 49 004 t in 2023 while the value climbed to $13.1 million, indicating sustained upward price pressure. In February 2023, Ercros inaugurated a new sodium chlorite production plant in Spain, which may have altered regional supply dynamics. By 2024, volume recovered to 56 806 t, though the market value eased slightly to $12.6 million.

In 2021, Hungary produced 82 564 tonnes of hypochlorites, chlorites, and hypobromites, marking a 5.4% decrease year-over-year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production declined by 2.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.9%. The highest production volume was recorded in 2020 at 87 266 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 2.8% during that year.

After a two-year decline, exports of hypochlorites, chlorites, and hypobromites from Hungary rebounded in 2021. Exports amounted to 26 621 tonnes, showing a significant improvement of 25.8% compared to 2020. From 2018 to 2021, exports decreased by 20.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 21 158 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 with a drop of 21.1%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Slovakia, Poland, and Czechia were the primary buyers of hypochlorites, chlorites, and hypobromites from Hungary. Slovakia accounted for 45.4% of exports in kind, Poland for 31.4%, and Czechia for 6.2%. Together, these three countries represented 83.0% of Hungary's total exports in kind during this period.
