In the late 2010s, Swedish authorities increased focus on microplastic risk management and promoted climate-efficient materials, affecting environmental standards for chemical products like zinc oxide. By 2020, the market volume for zinc oxide and peroxide in Sweden stood at 34 352 t, valued at 31.7 million USD.

Market volume rose to 37 695 t in 2021 but fell to 34 937 t in 2022. The decline coincided with the ongoing phase-out of zinc oxide in animal husbandry due to environmental regulations and reduced use of hazardous chemicals, including zinc oxide-related substances, in construction materials. In value terms, the market expanded sharply from 31.7 million USD in 2020 to 61.7 million USD in 2021 and 64.8 million USD in 2022, indicating significant price increases.

By 2024, regulatory pressure intensified. The Swedish Medical Products Agency banned zinc oxide as a UV filter in sunscreens over safety concerns, and new EU CLP regulations introduced stricter labeling and handling rules for chemical products. These changes, alongside mandatory food waste sorting and a broader industrial focus on sustainable transition, shaped the market environment, reflected in import volumes which declined to 1 357 t in 2024 after peaking at 1 473 t in 2023.

Exports zinc oxide and peroxide from Sweden

Sweden's exports of zinc oxide and peroxide have grown for the second year in a row. In 2019, exports stood at 122 tonnes, but by 2020 they surged to 165 tonnes, marking a significant 35.4% increase. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 71.5%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 19.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 92 tonnes, with that year also seeing the steepest decline of 4.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain, Poland, and Denmark remained the top buyers of zinc oxide and peroxide from Sweden. Spain accounted for 49.2% of exports in volume, Poland for 23.6%, and Denmark for 8.6%. Together, these three countries represented 81.4% of Sweden's total exports in this category.

Sweden's import spending on zinc oxide and peroxide has fallen for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 2,722 thousand US dollars, down 7.5% from 2019.
