Earlier Report Observations

The Czech market for household and sanitary paper in wide rolls and sheets expanded from 31.6 thousand t in 2018 to 39 thousand t in 2020. This growth was primarily driven by the European ban on exports of recycled paper to China, which took effect in late 2017 and created a sustained surplus of waste paper in Europe. The surplus lowered raw material costs for paper producers, supporting increased production and imports. Consumer preferences also shifted, with rising demand for wet wipes and unbleached, unfragranced toilet paper.

Market volume dipped to 35.1 thousand t in 2021 before rebounding to 42.7 thousand t in 2022. The recovery occurred despite record inflation above 15% and an energy crisis that raised manufacturing costs across the industry. By 2023, the market settled at 38.8 thousand t. In 2025, several Czech producers of paper hygiene products were recognized with the national Czech quality award, strengthening consumer trust in local brands.
