Earlier Report Observations
The production volume of fresh, chilled, or frozen horse, donkey, and mule meat in Ukraine declined steadily from 8 000 t in 2018 to 6 200 t in 2023. This contraction was shaped by broader shifts within the country's meat industry, where rising production and export of poultry and pork altered domestic demand patterns. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further strained logistics and affected consumption habits, contributing to the downturn.
The full-scale war that began in 2022 severely disrupted the meat market, leading to reduced domestic consumption and a reorientation of trade flows. Concurrently, changes in veterinary and sanitary legislation, along with a growing consumer preference for chicken over other meats, accelerated the decline of this niche segment. These factors collectively drove the market's consistent downward trajectory over the period.
