Earlier Report Observations
The Ukrainian pig fat market began the period at 103 179 t in 2018, supported by state funding of UAH 74 million for the swine sector. The introduction of mandatory HACCP requirements for pork in 2019 raised food safety standards. By 2020, the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak and the initiation of the 2020-2025 Swine Sector Plan pressured domestic supply chains, contributing to a market contraction to 78 503 t.
Production capacity increased in 2021 with the launch of the new 'Nyva Pereyaslavshchyny' complex, boosting sow capacity and helping lift output to 44 630 t. However, the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022 severely reduced domestic consumption, while sharp increases in feed and energy costs raised financial pressure on farmers, leading production and the overall market to fall to 71 905 t. In 2023, imports of pork plummeted 3.6-fold year-on-year, further tightening supplies of pig fat and reducing the market volume to 63 846 t.
Throughout these years, the sector adapted to stricter European traceability norms and quality control requirements introduced in 2022, followed by the 2024 rollout of a domestic pork traceability program, which continued to shape industry standards.
