The Norwegian market for fresh, chilled, or frozen horse, donkey, and mule meat contracted sharply between 2018 and 2022. Market volume fell from 56.6 thousand kg to 10 thousand kg, driven by a steep decline in domestic production from 56 thousand kg to 10 thousand kg over the same period.

In 2023, the market volume remained stable at 10 thousand kg. This stabilization occurred alongside weaker-than-expected demand for meat in general, price increases for pork and beef, and a shift in consumer preferences toward sustainability and plant-based foods. Additionally, mandatory origin labeling for certain meats, implemented in line with EU regulations, introduced new regulatory requirements for the industry.
