Earlier Report Observations

The Oceania market for horse, donkey and mule meat expanded in the late 2010s, reaching a peak volume of over 27 000 tonnes in 2020. This growth was followed by a sustained contraction that saw the market shrink by more than 18% over the next three years.

Production volumes gradually declined from 2021 onward, falling from 28 000 tonnes to just over 22 000 tonnes by 2023. At the same time, export shipments collapsed from over 2 000 tonnes to less than 100 tonnes, which failed to offset the drop in domestic output and contributed to the reduction in available supply.

In value terms, the market reached its highest point in 2019 at 101 million US dollars, then dropped sharply in 2020 before partially recovering in subsequent years. By 2023, the market value stood at 95 million US dollars, still below the pre-2020 level.
