The hop cones and lupulin market in Sub-Saharan Africa saw marked volatility in volume from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 50 thousand tons in 2018, consumption fell to 43 thousand tons the following year, then recovered to 48 thousand tons in 2020.

Market volume declined moderately to 45 thousand tons in 2021 and dropped more sharply to 39 thousand tons in 2022, the lowest level of the period. This was followed by a strong rebound to 45 thousand tons in 2023.

Domestic production followed a similar pattern, reaching its trough in 2022 at 38 thousand tons before rising again. Imports generally increased over the years, while exports decreased after 2020, influencing overall supply.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa produced 47 792 tonnes of hop cones and lupulin, marking a robust 12.7% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 19.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 49 521 tonnes, which represented a significant 23.5% increase that year. However, 2019 saw the largest decline of 14.4%.

The export market showed considerable volatility during these years. Sub-Saharan Africa exported 902 tonnes of hop cones and lupulin in 2020, representing a 17.2% improvement over the previous year. The lowest export volume occurred in 2018 at just 409 tonnes, which marked a substantial 62.7% decline. The market then rebounded strongly in 2019 with an 88.1% increase. Overall, exports peaked in 2017 before falling to their lowest point in 2018, creating a 2.7-fold difference between these two years.

Between 2017 and 2020, Israel, Sudan, and the United States formed the primary export markets for hop cones and lupulin from Sub-Saharan Africa. Israel accounted for 45.3% of exports in kind, Sudan for 21.2%, and the United States for 9.7%. Together, these three markets represented 76.2% of total export flows during this period.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Sudan, and Israel accounted for the largest share of export value. The United States represented 36.7% of exports in value terms, Sudan accounted for 9.6%, and Israel contributed 6.5%. Collectively, these three markets comprised 52.8% of total export flows during this period.

Imports hop cones and lupulin to Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa imported 1 028 tonnes of hop cones and lupulin, representing a 17.1% decrease year-over-year. The lowest import volume occurred in 2018 at 920 tonnes, while imports peaked in 2019 at 1 240 tonnes. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 with a 34.7% growth in import volume.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, Germany, the United States, and Slovenia served as the main sources of hop cones and lupulin imports to Sub-Saharan Africa.
