Earlier Report Observations

Melon seed production in Sub-Saharan Africa fluctuated between 831.2 thousand tonnes in 2018 and 841.2 thousand tonnes in 2020. The 2018 production level coincided with Nigerian government funding support for growers to increase farms and obtain improved seeds, aiming to boost seed production. However, output dipped to 813.6 thousand tonnes in 2019, a period when new players like Value Seeds Limited emerged as leading seed companies in the region, altering market structure.

After peaking in 2020, production declined to 829.0 thousand tonnes in 2021 and stabilized around 828 thousand tonnes in 2022. A modest recovery to 832.4 thousand tonnes occurred in 2023, despite market challenges including a scarcity of quality seeds and seedlings in Nigeria and limited government investment interest in the seed industry, which constrained yield growth.

In 2024, market dynamics were shaped by continued efforts to improve seed quality and certification alongside disruptive events. The COVID-19 pandemic caused seed procurement disruptions, a major warehouse fire destroyed melon seed stocks in Nasarawa State affecting supply, and aflatoxin contamination concerns influenced food safety focus. Concurrently, rising global health consciousness boosted demand for nutrient-rich melon seeds.
