Earlier Report Observations
Suriname's honey market saw initial growth in 2019 after the introduction of a national quality standard, which boosted demand and led to a surge in imports, raising market volume to 86 285 kg. However, local production faced challenges until 2020, when beekeepers began adopting the Perona system, a natural beekeeping method that replaced the traditional Langstroth approach and gradually increased output.
From 2021 onward, government subsidies to agricultural cooperatives and awareness campaigns promoting bee-friendly agriculture supported steady growth in domestic honey production, which reached 40 000 kg by 2023. Despite fluctuations in imports that caused market volume to vary, falling to 64 145 kg in 2023, the sector continued to develop with a focus on sustainable practices and new environmental legislation in 2024.
