Earlier Report Observations

The milk market in Suriname showed considerable variation in total volume between 2018 and 2023. After reaching a peak of 6 931 t in 2019, the market contracted over the next three years, falling to a low of 5 195 t in 2022. A strong rebound occurred in 2023, with market volume climbing to 6 128 t, recovering most of the previous losses.

This volatility was shaped by opposing movements in domestic production and imports. Local milk production declined from 3 500 t in 2018 to 2 501 t in 2021, before partially recovering to around 2 800 t. Imports, which constitute a large portion of supply, fluctuated more sharply, dropping from 3 933 t in 2019 to 2 387 t in 2022, which was the primary driver of the overall market contraction in that period.
