Between 2018 and 2020, the Spanish honey market volume declined from 41 225 t to 33 940 t. During this period, regulatory changes were introduced, including a 2020 decree requiring the country of origin to be stated on honey labels, enhancing transparency for consumers.

Market volume rebounded by 9.8% to 37 251 t in 2021, driven by an 11.6% increase in domestic production. This growth coincided with a rising share of consumers using honey throughout the year, which reached 46%.

A severe drought and heatwave in 2022 halved the honey harvest, causing a 6% drop in market volume to 35 017 t. Production stabilized near 27 423 t in 2023, but the market volume contracted further to 31 076 t, reflecting the ongoing impact of the previous year's climatic challenges.

Between 2017 and 2020, Spain ranked as the 13th largest honey producer in the world, maintaining its position among the global leaders in honey production.

Spain's honey production declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, with output reaching 30 513 tonnes. This represented a 2.1% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 3.8%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 1.3%. The highest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 36 394 tonnes, which marked a significant 23.8% increase from the previous year. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 14.4%.

Spain's honey production value also declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 121.4 million US dollars. This represented a slight 1.0% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, the production value decreased by 7.5%, equating to an average annual decline of 2.6%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 166.5 million US dollars, which marked a substantial 26.9% increase from the previous year. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when the value fell by 26.3%.

Exports honey from Spain

Following two years of decline, Spain's honey export volume rebounded in 2020, reaching 28 263 tonnes. This represented a dramatic 25.8% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 13.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.4%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 22 471 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2018, when exports fell by 7.0%.

During the 2017-2020 period, France, Germany, and Italy remained the primary destinations for Spain's honey exports by volume. France accounted for 28.8% of exports, Germany for 15.6%, and Italy for 7.4%. Together, these three markets represented 51.8% of Spain's total honey exports by volume.

After two years of decline, Spain's honey export value increased in 2020, reaching 112.4 million US dollars. This represented a 27.1% increase compared to the previous year. The lowest export value was recorded in 2019 at 88.5 million US dollars, which marked a 16.3% decline from 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Germany, and Italy were the main markets for Spain's honey exports by value. France accounted for 30.9% of export value, Germany for 15.8%, and Italy for 6.2%. Collectively, these three countries represented 52.9% of Spain's total honey export value.

Following two years of decline, Spain's honey import volume increased in 2020, reaching 31 690 tonnes. This represented a strong 18.2% gain compared to 2019. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 26 802 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2018, when imports fell by 13.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, China, Portugal, and Uruguay were Spain's largest honey suppliers by volume. China accounted for 27.6% of imports, Portugal for 18.0%, and Uruguay for 10.5%. Together, these three countries supplied 56.1% of Spain's total honey imports by volume.

After two years of decrease, Spain's honey import value rose in 2020, reaching 66.1 million US dollars. This reflected a strong 15.2% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 14.6%, with a compound annual decline rate of 5.1%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 57.4 million US dollars, which marked a 16.2% decline from 2018.

Spain's honey import structure by value from 2017 to 2020 shows a diversified set of trading partners. China accounted for 20.7% of import value, Portugal for 13.5%, and Uruguay for 9.8%. Together, these three countries represented 44.0% of total import value, while the remaining 56.0% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.
