Market volume for natural honey in Oceania fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. It expanded strongly from 17 188 t in 2018 to 31 340 t in 2020, then contracted sharply to 19 827 t in 2021. A modest recovery to 20 687 t followed in 2022, before a steep decline to 12 641 t in 2023.

In value terms, the market followed a somewhat different trajectory. Starting at $671.2 million in 2018, it dipped to $637.0 million in 2019 despite volume growth. After recovering to $669.6 million in 2020, value fell substantially to $482.7 million in 2021 and continued down to $283.9 million in 2023, indicating changes in both volume and average prices.

These market movements occurred alongside notable changes in the supply side. Domestic honey production in the region peaked at 40 200 t in 2020 but then declined to 24 529 t by 2023. Over the same period, imports rose from 5 577 t in 2018 to 7 592 t in 2023, while exports fell from 21 793 t to 19 480 t, altering the net trade balance.

From 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 23.1%, with an average annual rate of 7.2%. The lowest point was in 2019 at 266.6 million US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 6.9%.

However, over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 23.4%, with an average annual decline of 8.5%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 3 733 tonnes, which also saw the largest drop of 33.1%.
