Earlier Report Observations

The Estonian honey market volume expanded from 1 443 tonnes in 2018 to 1 665 tonnes in 2023, peaking at 1 768 tonnes in 2022. This overall growth was accompanied by fluctuations, including a dip in 2020.

Early in the period, tighter honey labelling rules requiring clear origin statements and regular adulteration checks that found minimal sugar adulteration bolstered consumer confidence in local honey. Later, the rising popularity of honey combined with turmeric as a natural antibiotic and its growing use in alternative medicine stimulated demand, aiding the market's recovery after 2020.

By 2022, effective state quality control confirming the high purity of Estonian honey, together with EU pollinator protection measures under the biodiversity strategy aimed at halting bee population decline, created favourable conditions for production and consumption growth. The subsequent slight correction in 2023 did not alter the overall upward trend.
