Kyrgyzstan's natural honey production increased from 1 958 t in 2018 to 2 270 t in 2019, supported by the launch of a new production line in Osh and growing exports to Japan, which reached 13.4 t. However, output dipped to 1 918 t in 2020, a year in which exports to Japan still rose to 15.7 t and UNDP projects continued to provide industry support.

A near tripling of honey exports to Japan to 43 t in 2021 helped push production to 2 364 t. Subsequent trade-facilitation projects promoting online sales and beekeeping digitization contributed to further growth, with output peaking at 2 970 t in 2022 before stabilizing at 2 946 t in 2023.

In 2021, Kyrgyzstan produced 2,364 tons of honey, marking a 23.3% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 20.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 6.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 1,918 tons, when output fell by 15.5%.

Exports honey from Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan's honey exports declined for the second year in a row. In 2021, exports totaled 395.3 tons, down 18.7% from the previous year. However, over the 2018-2021 period, exports increased by 10.2%, averaging 3.3% growth per year. The peak was in 2019 at 502.8 tons, when exports surged by 40.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, China, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were the main destinations for Kyrgyz honey, together accounting for 58.2% of total exports by volume. China led with 26.2%, followed by Saudi Arabia at 19.8%, and the UAE at 12.1%.

Kyrgyzstan's honey export value also fell for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to $1,699,000, a 6.1% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value rose by 13.9%, with an average annual growth of 4.4%. The highest value was $2,030,000 in 2019, when it jumped 36.1%, while the largest decline occurred in 2020 at 10.9%.

Honey imports into Kyrgyzstan showed significant volatility during these years. In 2020, imports hit a low of 6.2 tons, declining by 75.3%. By 2021, imports surged to 70.4 tons, a dramatic increase of 1,032.3% from the previous year. Overall, imports fluctuated widely, with a 11.3-fold difference between the peak in 2021 and the trough in 2020.
