Northern Africa's hazelnut market is primarily geared toward local consumption with negligible exports. From 2018 to 2021, its total volume expanded rapidly from 5 835 t to 13 425 t. This growth was almost entirely driven by a surge in imports, which rose from 5 790 t to 13 383 t over the period, while domestic production remained stable at 45–46 t.

The market corrected in 2022, with volume falling to 8 891 t as imports dropped. This adjustment coincided with reported constraints on demand in the region due to hazelnut allergies, which limited consumption growth. Imports and market volume partially recovered to 10 281 t in 2023.

By 2024, specific factors in Morocco indicated a shift, with the country's shelled hazelnut trade value declining for the first time in nine years, despite continued growth in domestic consumption. This points to the influence of global price fluctuations and supply-chain disruptions on regional trade flows, even as local demand persists.
