Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the in-shell walnut market volume in Northern Africa expanded strongly, rising from 48 988 t to 75 484 t. This growth was driven by increasing global consumer preference for nutritious nuts, which boosted demand, and was supported by rising world nut production that improved supply availability. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted distribution channels but did not reverse the upward trend, as imports into the region continued to climb.

Market volume contracted to 68 893 t in 2022, primarily due to a sharp drop in domestic production, which fell by over 12 000 t from the previous year. This period coincided with an exceptional walnut harvest in France that saturated European markets and influenced global trade conditions. In 2023, the market recovered to 74 998 t as French production decreased after the previous surplus, while imports into Northern Africa reached a new high of 41 543 t, sustaining overall market size.

The European Union's introduction of a sustainability policy for nuts in 2020 and ongoing efforts to structure walnut sectors in key producing countries like France contributed to evolving supply dynamics throughout the period. Steady import growth, from 12 751 t in 2018 to 41 543 t in 2023, underscored persistent regional demand for in-shell walnuts.
