Between 2018 and 2023, strawberry production in Northern Africa showed strong overall growth, increasing from 599 thousand tons to 1.03 million tons. The market volume followed a similar trajectory, rising from 560 thousand tons to 989 thousand tons over the same period. This expansion was interrupted only in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted agricultural supply chains and dampened demand, leading to a temporary decline.

Following the 2020 dip, production rebounded sharply, reaching 815 thousand tons in 2021 and further climbing to 1.03 million tons in 2023. Imports remained negligible throughout, while exports stayed consistent, indicating that the region's market is primarily supplied by domestic output. The sustained growth in later years points to robust production capacity and expanding market volume.

Northern Africa's strawberry production saw a decline in 2020, following two consecutive years of growth. In that year, the region produced 615.8 thousand tonnes of strawberries, marking a 14.8% decrease from 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually increased by 25.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.9%. The peak was reached in 2019 at 723.1 thousand tonnes, while the most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, at 22.0%.

Northern Africa's strawberry production value continued to rise for the third year in a row in 2020. The output was valued at 2 396 million US dollars, reflecting a 10.3% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, the production value grew by 50.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.6%.

Exports strawberries from Northern Africa

In 2020, strawberry exports from Northern Africa to international markets totaled 37 887 tonnes, a 27.7% drop from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 13.1%, with an average annual decline of 4.6%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 52 397 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 32.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands were the primary destinations for Northern Africa's strawberry exports by volume. Spain accounted for 31.7% of exports, Belgium for 11.5%, and the Netherlands for 9.4%, together making up 52.6% of total exports.
