The grape market in Zimbabwe experienced notable shifts between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 5 226 tonnes in 2018, the market volume dropped to 3 596 tonnes in 2019 as imports collapsed from 1 740 tonnes to just 66 tonnes. This contraction aligned with broader challenges in agricultural commodity markets, including inefficiencies and state monopolies in grain marketing through the Grain Marketing Board.

From 2020 onward, imports steadily recovered, reaching 1 474 tonnes by 2023 and lifting the total market volume to 5 025 tonnes. A significant driver was the government's decision in 2022 to remove import licence requirements for seven commodities, easing trade barriers and improving product availability. Concurrently, horticulture sector developments—such as identified fruit-growing opportunities in the Eastern Highlands and rising exports of high-value crops like granadilla and citrus—created a favorable environment for fruit market growth. Grape production remained stable at around 3 500 tonnes annually, despite increased input costs from global fertiliser price spikes linked to the Russia-Ukraine war.
