Earlier Report Observations
The Bolivian grape market began the period with growth, as production increased from 22 674 t in 2018 to 23 549 t in 2019. This rise was supported by state actions under Supreme Decree No. 3528 of April 2018, which aimed to strengthen the productive complex for grapes, singani, and wine through soil fertility improvements and better coordination for commercializing table grapes in Tarija, enhancing sector organization and potential yields.
Production dipped to 22 235 t in 2020, coinciding with reported tensions from introducing modern viticulture systems into traditional growing areas like the Valle de los Cintis, which likely caused temporary disruptions. A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with output jumping to 27 990 t. This surge was facilitated by the cultural recognition of the Fiesta de la Vendimia Chapaca as intangible heritage, boosting sector identity, and notably by modifications to Law No. 1391 that extended zero-tariff imports for machinery, enabling widespread modernization of vineyard and winery equipment.
Output remained at a high level in 2022, stabilizing at 27 524 t amid broader regulatory developments including specific provisions in the 2023 state budget. However, by 2023 both production and total market volume fell significantly to 23 066 t and 23 559 t respectively, returning to volumes closer to the start of the period.
