The fresh melon market in Zimbabwe grew steadily from 452.4 tonnes in 2018 to 499 tonnes in 2023. This expansion was underpinned by a gradual increase in domestic production, which rose from 447.5 tonnes to 466.6 tonnes over the six-year period.

A significant boost to market volume came from imported melons, particularly after 2020. Imports jumped from less than 1 tonne in 2019-2020 to 13 tonnes in 2021 and further to 32.4 tonnes in 2023, adding substantial volume to the available supply.

Export activity was limited, with only 3 tonnes shipped in 2020. The overall market growth reflects stronger domestic consumption, supported by both local production and rising imports.

Melon production in Zimbabwe has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 456.5 tonnes of melons, representing a 0.8% increase compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 2.9%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 1.0%.

The volume of melon imports into Zimbabwe has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2019, imports stood at a higher level, but by 2020 they had dropped to 370 kilograms, marking a 24.1% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 99.6%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -84.2%.

In 2019, imports were higher, but by 2020 they had decreased to 375 US dollars, representing a sharp contraction of 50.1% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 99.5%, equating to an annualized decline of 83.4%.
