Earlier Report Observations
From 2018, the Argentine grape market faced a growing structural shortage of wine grapes, which constrained overall supply. This shortage altered supply chain dynamics, pushing market participants to focus on grape varieties and regions with better price-quality ratios and to strengthen ties between growers and wineries. As a result, the market volume in physical terms declined from 2 530 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 2 019 thousand tonnes in 2020.
In 2021, the market temporarily recovered to 2 206 thousand tonnes, but the underlying shortage persisted. The following year, the National Viticulture Institute began official tracking of organic grape intake, reporting 706 171 quintals, highlighting this emerging segment. However, 2023 saw the worst grape harvest since 1959 due to extreme weather, slashing production and causing industry tensions, with increased reliance on domestic demand for wine grapes. The market volume dropped sharply to 1 433 thousand tonnes.
Throughout the period, domestic demand remained a key driver while wine exports contracted. Overall, the grape market volume fell by 43% from 2018 to 2023, reflecting chronic raw material scarcity and climatic challenges.
