From 2018 to 2019, Mexico's treenut market was influenced by significant production growth supported by an expansion of pecan orchard area to 112,000 hectares and rising demand from Asian markets. Duty-free access to the United States facilitated trade, leading to a sharp 19% surge in exports in 2019. This export growth drew supply away from the domestic market, reducing its size to 188 thousand t despite stable production.

Market volume fluctuated in the following years, recovering to 239 thousand t in 2020 as export volumes eased, then contracting to 225 thousand t in 2021 amid lower production and reduced imports.

By 2022, increased global competition, particularly from South Africa capturing share in the Chinese market, contributed to a decline in Mexico's export volumes. This factor, combined with a rise in production, pushed the domestic market to a peak of 276 thousand t. In 2023, the market retracted to 236 thousand t as exports rebounded and production moderated.

Mexico's treenuts production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 265.6 K t of treenuts, down 10.3% from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production fell by 8.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 298.1 K t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.8%.

Mexico's treenuts export volume declined for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the country exported 86.7 K t of treenuts, marking a sharp contraction of 34.0% compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports decreased by 26%, with a CAGR of 9.6%. The peak export volume occurred in 2019 at 179.1 K t, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 52.9%.
