Earlier Report Observations

Luxembourg's grape production reached 18 100 tonnes in 2018, with a market volume of 20 939 tonnes. That year, new regulations on must and wine acidification were implemented, and the vineyard area began a notable shift from traditional varieties like Elbling and Rivaner toward higher-quality grapes such as Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. This qualitative repositioning likely contributed to the sustained value of output despite subsequent volume reductions.

Production fell sharply to 10 160 tonnes in 2019, and market volume dropped to 12 832 tonnes. A partial recovery occurred over 2020 and 2021, with volumes stabilizing around 13 000–16 000 tonnes, still significantly below the 2018 peak.

From 2022, legislative changes including the establishment of the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration introduced stricter food production controls. In 2023, government bills aimed at supporting active farmers, including winegrowers, were proposed. By 2024, challenging weather conditions with high humidity and late frosts impacted grape maturation, emphasizing the sector's focus on quality for protected appellations like 'Moselle Luxembourgeoise'.
