Earlier Report Observations

The volume of the European grape market fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 31 540 thousand tons in 2018. Adverse weather conditions, including droughts and frosts in key producing regions, contributed to a decline in market volume to 28 033 thousand tons by 2019. The market recovered slightly in 2020 to 29 202 thousand tons, supported by increased consumer demand for healthy foods during the COVID-19 pandemic, which offset some supply chain disruptions.

Technological innovations in post-harvest handling and the introduction of new seedless and native varieties helped improve productivity and quality, contributing to a market expansion to 29 577 thousand tons in 2022. However, inflationary pressures and rising production costs weighed on consumer spending, leading to a drop to 28 042 thousand tons in 2021. Regulatory changes in countries like Poland and Germany aimed at managing production potential and traceability also influenced market dynamics.

The market volume fell sharply to 25 865 thousand tons in 2023 due to limited grape supply in Europe, primarily caused by continued adverse climatic events in Spain and Italy. Growing competition from emerging countries in the southern hemisphere added pressure on European producers, while health-conscious preferences continued to drive demand for premium and organic grapes.
