Earlier Report Observations

The grape market volume in Kazakhstan declined from 169.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 154.2 thousand tons in 2020. State support through the Agribusiness Development Program for 2017-2021 aimed to expand vineyard areas and boost production. In 2019, Russia's adoption of the Viticulture and Winemaking Law, which banned imported wine material, indirectly affected regional grape trade and contributed to the market contraction.

Market volume surged to 194.9 thousand tons in 2021, driven largely by a sharp increase in imports, then eased to 186.0 thousand tons in 2022. These volatile movements occurred amid ongoing initiatives to expand vineyard acreage and introduce improved grape varieties under state-backed programs.

In 2023, the market volume plummeted by 31.8% to 126.8 thousand tons, primarily due to adverse weather conditions including a harsh winter and May frosts that damaged yields and slashed production. Concurrently, foreign investment of 3.5 billion tenge into vineyards in Turkestan region signaled growing industry interest.
