The market for citrus fruit in Kazakhstan showed variable dynamics from 2018 to 2021. After reaching 71 900 tons in 2018, the market volume contracted to 61 400 tons in 2019. The following year, despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected logistics and resource availability, the market recovered to 63 900 tons in 2020 as consumer preferences shifted towards organic and environmentally friendly products. This trend continued into 2021, with market volume growing to 67 500 tons, supported by a rebound in imports, particularly from China, and an expanding variety of hybrid citrus types.

A sharp expansion occurred from 2022 onward. In 2022, the market jumped to 92 500 tons, driven by a significant increase in imports from China, which boosted supplies of mandarins and oranges. The geopolitical crisis and sanctions further influenced trade patterns, prompting efforts to substitute imports from Russia. By 2023, the market volume surged to 134 300 tons, reflecting sustained import growth and ongoing consumer demand for organic citrus fruit.

In 2019, Kazakhstan produced 1,652 tonnes of citrus fruit, marking the lowest output in recent years. Production then increased by 1.0% to reach 1,669 tonnes in 2020. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1,689 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 2.2%, while the largest increase was seen in 2018 at 1.3%.

In 2020, Kazakhstan exported 5,042 tonnes of citrus fruit, representing a sharp decline of 58.7% from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 12,200 tonnes, while the most substantial increase occurred in 2018, surging by 427.9%.

The most significant decline occurred in 2019, falling by 11.7%, while the largest increase was in 2018, rising by 47.3%.

The peak was in 2018 at 46,051 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase occurred that same year, rising by 49.6%.
