Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the grape market volume in Chile declined from 2,040 thousand tons to 1,774 thousand tons. This decrease was linked to a loss of competitiveness due to aging vineyards, rising costs, and labor shortages, which led to production adjustments. The establishment of the UVANOVA commission in 2018 initiated research and development efforts to address these challenges.
In 2021, market volume surged to 2,247 thousand tons, aided by reduced output from competitors like California and Peru, which boosted demand for Chilean grapes. The achievement of the Systems Approach for exports to the United States in 2022 allowed shipments without methyl bromide fumigation, improving market access, but increased exports that year reduced domestic market volume to 1,988 thousand tons.
By 2023, market volume recovered to 2,206 thousand tons as exports temporarily dropped, while the industry continued adopting new varieties, which accounted for 64% of exports. Lower supply from competitors and steady U.S. demand supported the market.
