Colombia's production of melons and papayas has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 504.7 thousand tonnes, showing a modest 2.0% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 20.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.5%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 357.0 thousand tonnes, which saw the biggest decline of 14.6%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the largest increase at 38.6%.

Exports melons and papayas from Colombia

Colombia's exports of melons and papayas have expanded for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports hit 1 754 tonnes, surging by 46.3% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 339.7%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 63.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, most of Colombia's melon and papaya exports in volume terms went to just two countries: Curaçao and Aruba. Other markets played a smaller role individually during this period.

Exports in value, K $ US

After declining for two years, Colombia's melon and papaya exports in value terms rebounded in 2020. Exports totaled 1 287 thousand US dollars, up by 2.8% from the previous year. However, over the full 2017-2020 period, export value fell by 70.4%, with an average annual decline of 33.3%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 1 251 thousand US dollars, and the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 at 52.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ecuador was the leading market for Colombia's melon and papaya exports in value terms, making up 75.0% of the total. Other destinations contributed less significantly.
