Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for grape wine in China contracted from 2 909 million L in 2018 to 2 007 million L in 2023, a decline of over 30%. The sharp drop in 2020 to 2 428 million L was directly driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced social consumption occasions. After a temporary recovery to 2 414 million L in 2022, volume plunged again in 2023 as the consumer market remained depressed.

Structural shifts altered the market throughout this period. E-commerce channels expanded rapidly, becoming a key sales avenue. Consumer preferences moved towards low-alcohol options, white wines, and sparkling wines, with young and female drinkers driving demand. Imported wine, led by Australian, French, and Chilean products, competed fiercely with domestic producers.

A major policy change occurred in 2024 when China lifted anti-dumping measures on Australian wine. This led to a surge in imports from Australia, with import value jumping 38.8% year-on-year. This policy shift reshaped the competitive landscape, favoring imported brands in the mid-to-high end despite ongoing weak domestic consumption.
