Earlier Report Observations

The Czech grape wine market volume grew from 205.1 million liters in 2018 to 214.0 million liters in 2019. This expansion followed the implementation of a revised Vineyard and Winemaking Act, which aimed to reduce the black market and adulteration, thereby strengthening market regulation. Concurrently, negotiated increases in extraordinary EU support for farmers provided additional financial backing to the winegrowing sector.

In 2020, the market contracted slightly to 211.8 million liters due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global wine trade and led to a sharp decline in restaurant sales under anti-epidemic measures. A recovery followed in 2021, with the market reaching 222.2 million liters as consumer behavior shifted, placing greater emphasis on wine quality and sustainability amidst ongoing pandemic-related and inflationary influences.

Subsequent years were marked by regulatory and environmental factors. New 2022 legislative amendments that restricted barrel wine sales to only producers or official recipients altered distribution patterns. This, combined with the growing emphasis on organic wine production and the noted impact of climate change on grape harvests, contributed to a market decline to 218.5 million liters in 2022 and a further decrease to 211.9 million liters by 2023.
