The grape wine market in Africa saw significant fluctuations in volume between 2018 and 2023. Market size dropped sharply from 6 192 million liters in 2018 to 3 246 million liters in 2019, before recovering to 5 628 million liters by 2022. In 2023, volume receded slightly to 5 364 million liters. In value terms, the market followed a different pattern, rising from $1 535 million in 2018 to $2 079 million in 2019, then declining to $1 442 million in 2021, and climbing again to $2 116 million by 2023.

Domestic production increased from 1 052 million liters in 2018 to a peak of 1 232 million liters in 2021, then fell to 1 014 million liters in 2023. Imports, which heavily influence total market volume, plummeted in 2019 to 2 506 million liters from 5 663 million liters the previous year, but then trended upward, reaching 4 870 million liters in 2022. Exports remained relatively modest, ranging between 303 and 556 million liters annually.

In 2024, import and export volumes were recorded at 285 million liters and 305 million liters, respectively. During this year, South African wineries such as La Motte and Keermont Vineyards highlighted their focus on quality through biological farming, traditional harvest methods, and innovative fermentation techniques. These practices aim to enhance product differentiation and consumer engagement.
