Earlier Report Observations

The goat meat market in Kenya experienced strong growth from 2018 to 2020, with volume increasing from 31 096 t to 70 426 t. This expansion was supported by the state-owned Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), which provided a stable market for livestock farmers and supplied meat for domestic consumption and export. Additionally, livestock markets such as Rumuruti improved supply chain efficiency and raw material access for producers.

After reaching a peak in 2020, the market volume contracted over the next two years, falling to 62 482 t in 2021 and 44 768 t in 2022. Production followed a similar declining trend during this period.

A recovery emerged in 2023, with market volume rising to 60 028 t and production rebounding to 77 521 t, accompanied by a significant increase in exports. In 2024, the reopening of the Kenya Meat Commission with the objective of promoting the meat industry, along with efforts to implement an animal identification and traceability system to meet international market requirements, pointed toward renewed institutional support for the sector.
