Production of fuel wood in chips and particles in Norway in 2018 was partly supported by farmers diversifying their activities to generate additional income from bioenergy. The market volume that year was 804 thousand tons. Over the next two years, the market volume fluctuated, falling to 740 thousand tons in 2019 but recovering to 808 thousand tons in 2020.

A significant increase occurred in 2021, when the market volume reached 990 thousand tons. Then, in 2022, the reform of the EU Emissions Trading System led to a sharp rise in the carbon price, while high energy prices enhanced the appeal of bioenergy as an alternative source. Despite these factors, the market volume slightly declined to 949 thousand tons in 2022. In 2023, amid continued energy price volatility and a policy focus on energy efficiency, the market volume dropped to 673 thousand tons, largely due to increased exports and lower production.

The lowest point was in 2020, when exports fell to 296.4 K t, representing the largest decline of 40.3% during this timeframe.
