After a two-year decline, non-coniferous wood fuel production in Norway rebounded in 2021. The country produced 1,092 thousand cubic meters that year, marking a solid 13.1% increase from 2020. Production had previously reached its lowest point in 2020 at 966 thousand cubic meters, following the largest annual decline of 8.4% in 2019.

Non-coniferous wood fuel exports from Norway grew for the third consecutive year in 2021. Shipments reached 93.6 thousand cubic meters, representing a 129.3% surge compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports expanded by 648.2%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of 95.6%.

From 2018 to 2021, Denmark dominated Norway's non-coniferous wood fuel exports in volume terms, accounting for 89.0% of total shipments. All other countries combined represented the remaining share.

Norway's non-coniferous wood fuel exports in value terms increased for the third straight year in 2021. The country exported $3,658 thousand worth of non-coniferous wood fuel, up 119.2% from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, export value grew by 579.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 89.4%.

Throughout the 2018-2021 period, Denmark remained the primary destination for Norway's non-coniferous wood fuel exports by value, capturing 75.6% of total flows. The remainder was distributed among various smaller markets.

Norway imported 152.3 thousand cubic meters of non-coniferous wood fuel in 2021, showing a sharp 57.7% increase from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, import volume rose by 28.4%, corresponding to an 8.7% annualized growth rate. The lowest volume was recorded in 2020 at 96.6 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest annual decline of 29.6%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Estonia (39.2%), Russia (28.1%), and Latvia (13.6%) were the main suppliers of non-coniferous wood fuel to Norway in volume terms. Together, these three countries accounted for 80.9% of total imports.
