The Kenyan fruit and vegetable juices market experienced a substantial surge, with volume rising from 61.4 million litres in 2018 to a peak of 106.8 million litres in 2020, an increase of 68%.

Following the peak, market volume contracted sharply to 61.6 million litres in 2021 and further declined to 36.4 million litres by 2023. This period was marked by high post-harvest losses of fresh fruit, reaching up to 56%, which constrained the raw material supply for juice production. Additionally, growing export volumes of superfoods like avocados, which increased by 19.6% from 2022 to 2023, likely diverted fruit supplies away from the domestic processing sector.

Kenya's production of fruit and vegetable juices grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 121 925 thousand liters, marking a significant 56.6% increase from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 58.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 16.7%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 76 156 thousand liters, which also saw the largest decline of 0.8%.

In 2020, the value of fruit and vegetable juices produced in Kenya reached 147.0 million US dollars, showing a sharp rise of 47.4% compared to the year before. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 58.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 16.6%. The largest decrease occurred in 2019, with a drop of 1.9%.

The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 27 337 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest rise of 22.1%.
