Between 2018 and 2020, the market for frozen vegetables in New Zealand experienced moderate fluctuations. Volume declined from 51 363 t in 2018 to 47 299 t in 2019, before recovering slightly to 50 749 t in 2020.

A significant expansion occurred in 2021, with market volume jumping 41% to 71 589 t. That same year, the market saw a major structural shift as Watties Heinz ceased processing vegetable production in several regions, moving supermarket homebrand sourcing overseas amid international supply chain and fuel shortages.

Market volume contracted by 19% to 57 788 t in 2022, primarily driven by poor growing weather and supply chain issues that pushed fruit and vegetable prices sharply higher. A partial recovery to 66 552 t followed in 2023, supported by increased imports and packaging of imported ingredients as the industry adapted to ongoing supply constraints and changing consumer preferences.
