From 2018 to 2023, the domestic market volume for dried shelled peas in New Zealand fluctuated significantly, primarily driven by changes in export activity. The market size contracted to 5 653 t in 2021 when export volumes peaked at 18 969 t, a year in which export value also rose by 8.7%. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted global supply chains, contributing to export volatility and a reduced domestic availability of 7 815 t that year.

Production remained stable at around 24 000 t annually, with a slight increase in 2022 as New Zealand recorded one of the world's highest pea production growth rates at 2.6%. This period also saw the 2022 amendment to the Resource Management (National Environmental Standards for Freshwater) Regulations, which introduced new rules for agricultural practices. The Pea Industry Development Group (PIDG) continued its long-standing role in addressing grower profitability and supporting the industry.

In value terms, the market grew from USD 13.7 million in 2018 to USD 19.1 million in 2023. This increase was supported by rising export prices, which fluctuated from USD 1.13 to USD 1.15 per kilogram between 2021 and 2022 before reaching USD 2.03-2.04 in 2023, although a downward trend emerged later.

New Zealand's dried shelled peas production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 24 408 tonnes, marking a slight year-on-year decrease of 0.6%. Production peaked in 2019 at 24 648 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.6%.

Output was valued at 34 891 thousand US dollars, representing a modest 2.9% decline from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production value increased by 2.4%, averaging 0.8% annually. The highest value was recorded in 2020 at 35 937 thousand US dollars, while 2019 saw the largest annual increase of 3.3%.

The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 13 397 tonnes, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 9.7%. In contrast, 2020 saw the most significant annual increase of 27.2%.

From 2018 to 2021, New Zealand's dried shelled peas exports were not concentrated in a few key markets. Thailand accounted for 10.7% of export volume, Algeria for 10.2%, and Japan for 9.4%. Together, these three countries represented just 30.3% of total export flows.

Between 2018 and 2021, export value grew by 28.8%, averaging 8.8% annually. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 19 125 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual decline of 9.1%. Meanwhile, 2020 experienced the most significant annual increase of 30.4%.
